As a major waterfront developer and waterfront home builder, and with sailboat racing in our own history, we at Corinthian have chosen to join forces with host Lakewood Yacht Club to adopt Heald Bank with full corporate sponsorship. Now renamed the "Corinthian Homes Heald Bank Regatta", our serious goal is to quickly build the race into a major national offshore event. Corinthian is providing the financial support, marketing experience, and race leadership. Corinthian's approach is to present the race with a personality to match the reality of this special night regatta: "For Bold Sailors Only, in the dark of the night".
Starting from marker number 11 halfway out to the Galveston jetties at 3:00 pm, it has been sailed by thousands of bold sailors out the Heald bank, around the Buccaneer rig and back through the jetties, more than 90 nautical miles, primarily sailed in the dark of the night.
As sailors ourselves, we know casual and hard-core racers love prizes, rewards, and recognition. Corinthian has arranged for 16 high dollar prizes, regatta cups, skipper T-shirts, media support, and very special trophies, big and showy to match the sailors personalities. We will have two perpetual trophies: one each for first across in Spin and Non-Spin to attract the hardcore, "rock star" racers. Already we have signed up the big boat Super 70 class and the red-hot J-80 Class, both are new to Heald Bank. Their spinnakers are majestic as sunset and require extraordinary night racing skills, not for the weak at heart.
Corinthian will also compete in the regatta on its corporate sponsored Parrot Eyes, a Tatoosh 42' and will race PHRF. Skippered by Joe Watson, Parrot Eyes is an offshore racer-cruiser designed for heavy weather racing. The Parrot Eyes T-shirts have a graphic of a parrot with a boat in its beak and saying - "my eye, my beak, your boat". That says it all!!!
